Clara presently works for the School Health & Safe & Drug Free Schools & Communities Program at Region One Educational Service Center. The program's mission is to provide strategies for prevention, so that schools can assure healthy and protective school environments for children. The program provides ongoing professional development and technical assistance to all school personnel infusing research based programs, coordinated school health programs, and school health advisory councils to address physical, mental, social and emotional health issues. In order to address barriers to learning, effective prevention practitioners and educators need to utilize a comprehensive, multifaceted and integrated continuum of intervention strategies. Schools alone cannot do this, it requires, collaboration among schools, families, communities, and social institutions.
The School Health & Safe & Drug-Free Schools and Communities Program promotes a framework for supportive and protective school environments that coordinate and collaborate, so that youth and adults can make informed decisions about risk behaviors and consequences. Empowered staff, parents, and communities intentionally plan, target and model behavior; they involve youth, so they feel empowered and connected to school, thus, improving school climate and hope for the future! |
